Structure and Function in Biomedical Sciences

Functional AnatomyFunctional Anatomy

Outline

The Department of Function Anatomy offers the typical gross anatomy course on a cadaver for second year medical students. For the research, the laboratory utilizes the electron microscopical and immunohistochemical techniques to explore the ultrastructures of the anterior pituitary glands, pancreas and liver.

Cell BiologyCell Biology

Outline

The Department of Cell Biology was founded for the purpose of basic research and education in the field of Cell Biology in 1980. Dr. Makoto Nakanishi took over as Head in 2000. We have investigated molecular mechanisms of cell cycle progression and its checkpoint systems. Our research goal is to develop a new anti-tumor strategy using genes involved in checkpoint systems.

Cell PhysiologyCell Physiology

Outline

Cellular mechanisms of muscle contraction and their regulation are the main research project of this department. A recent project is focused on the mechanism of rhythmic activity and junctional transmission between nerves and muscles in several types of visceral smooth muscle, and excitation-contraction mechanism in skeletal and smooth muscles, by using the electrophysiology and the measurement of change in intracellular Ca concentration.

Our department researches surgical oncology and treatment strategies of both digestive tract and hepato-biliary pancreatic diseases widely. We focus especially on the molecular biology concerning invasion and metastasis formation of malignant tumor in these fields. Magnificent goal of our research is to improve the prognosis of cancer patients.

Our focus is on molecular and genetical studies on mutations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes found in esophageal, breast and lung cancers. Our Science paper (304:1497-1500) on EGFR mutation has been cited over 1500 times. Our department studies on the thymus and thymoma and their roles in autoimmune diseases and the estrogen receptor and its regulation.

We operated on about 250 patients with cardiovascular diseases in 2006 and 80% of patients had congenital heart disease; however, we address the problem in adult cardiac surgery. Our interests in study are the surgical therapy of complex heart defects, pulmonary circulation and protection of reperfusion injury at operataion.

Our focus is to unravel the mechanisms mediating ocular angiogenesis, such as AMD and diabetic retinopathy. Using in vivo models, we have uncovered a critical role for leukocytes and adhesion molecules in the development abnormal blood vessels in the eye. Another of our goals is to develop transscleral drug delivery of active therapeutics to the retina and choroid.
