No.02 As I want to be an ophthalmologist in a future, I chose to study at the department of Ophthalmology and Visual science for four weeks. Kim Donghyun

As I want to be an ophthalmologist in a future, I chose to study at the department of Ophthalmology and Visual science for four weeks. On the first day, Dr. Nozaki told me that she would give me a chance to do cataract surgery on pig eyes two weeks later.

I was so excited, because in Korea, we, students only see the surgery but never do the operations ourselves.
After a few days, Dr. Nozaki gave me an opportunity to assist her surgery. As this was my first time to assist with ophthalmology surgery, I hardly knew what to do and only watched the operation through a microscope until the surgery was finished.

After this experience, before someone told me to, I asked the doctor if I could scrub to assist with the surgery, and talked to patient in my poor Japanese to do so. The more I worked as an assistant, the more confidence and sense of achievement I gained. And finally I could feel I was a member of the ophthalmology department at Nagoya City University. I challenged myself to do clinical practice in Japan and I ended up having confidenceand belief in myself.

This experience will help me to choose the right path and help me to make decisions about my future as a doctor. Thank you, all of doctors at department of ophthalmology of Nagoya City University for your precious teaching.
